A Storytelling Workshop

Telling Our Father's Story

When we speak of our fathers in our daily lives, we usually speak in snippets; we comment, we gripe, we groan. That kind of communication conveys just a smattering of the emotional lode and archetypal richness of the relationship that lays hidden beneath the surface. When will you take the time for a complete telling of this man's actions and the impact on your life? At his funeral? With brothers and sisters? Ever?

Telling Our Father's Story is a workshop that provides you with a framework for exploring this deeper terrain and speaking of your discoveries now. To be able to tell your father's story with depth and detail is to know the particulars of your specific heritage as well as our primary link to a universal human relationship. One result is a greater compassion for yourself and your father. Another the is the rounding out of this boy, man, elder who has made an indelible mark on your life. No longer can he be portrayed as good or evil, such absolutes no longer work.

Story is the framework we will use to explore this complex relationship. By way of analogy, a story can be described as a string of beads, where each bead is a specific scene or event, and the string is the enduring voice of the teller. While both oral and written forms of story represent an ancient technology unsurpassed for conveying the richness and complexity of life, the oral form will be our ultimate focus in this workshop.

To get there we will use pen and paper, movement and voice exercises, group process and other tools to draw out and incorporate the images and energies we carry in our body mind. Each of you will have center stage at least twice during this workshop; once to be coached on the process, and finally as you present Your Father's Story.
